  1. ^ Regions where cases were diagnosed. Nationality and location of original infection may vary.
  2. ^ Reported confirmed cases. Actual case numbers may be higher.
  3. ^ "–" denotes that no data is currently available for that territory, not that the value is zero.
  4. ^ Includes clinically diagnosed cases and deaths from 12 February 2020 and onwards in the province of Hubei.
  5. ^ Includes all cases overseas in regions of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte and Réunion, and in collectivities of French Polynesia, Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin.
  6. ^ Includes all dependencies cases in Guam, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands, in addition to cases identified on the Grand Princess.
  7. ^ While there are more positive cases in Switzerland, the figure reported here is only the number of confirmed cases.
  8. ^ Includes all cases in the British Overseas Territories of Gibraltar and the Cayman Islands and the Crown dependencies of Jersey and Guernsey.
  9. ^ Includes cases counted in all four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, i.e. 1,413 in the European Netherlands, 2 in Aruba, 2 in Curaçao and 0 in Sint Maarten.
  10. ^ The Dutch Government (responsible agency RIVM) does not count its number of recoveries.[9]
  11. ^ From 13 March, testing of the normal population was discontinued, and is now only reserved for health professionals and acute ill people in vulnerable groups. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health states there are more infected people in Norway than the figures show. The dark numbers are presumed to be much higher because of limited testing.[11]
  12. ^ Testing of suspected infections has been semi-suspended in certain regions as of 12 March 2020, in order to focus efforts on people with increased risk of serious illness and complications.
  13. ^ Includes all cases in constituent countries of the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
  14. ^ The British cruise ship Diamond Princess was in Japanese waters, and Japanese administration was asked to manage its quarantine, with the passengers having not entered Japan. Therefore, this case is neither included in the Japanese government's official count nor in United Kingdom's one. The World Health Organization classifies the cases as being located "on an international conveyance".
  15. ^ Includes cases identified on the MS River Anuket.
  16. ^ Excluding the cases from Diamond Princess cruise ship which are classified as "on an international conveyance".
  17. ^ Excluding Northern Cyprus.

Confirmed cases

As of 16 March 2020, a total of 169,411 cases were confirmed with 86,228 active cases in 146 countries and territories around the world, including five cruise ships.

Statistics

Africa

Cases have been confirmed in Tanzania,[116] Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia,[117] Gabon,[118] Ghana, Guinea,[119] Kenya,[120] Ivory Coast,[121] Liberia,[122] Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia,[122] South Africa, Sudan,[123] Togo, and Tunisia. According to Michael Yao, WHO's head of emergency operations in Africa, early detection is vital because the continent's health systems "are already overwhelmed by many ongoing disease outbreaks".[124]

Asia

A cluster of mysterious pneumonia cases were detected in December 2019 in Wuhan and eventually spread to the rest of China.[125] Afterwards, many other Asian countries started to confirm cases, with some of the most affected countries being South Korea, Japan, and Iran. Sophisticated modelling of the outbreak suggests that the number of cases in China would have been many times higher without interventions such as early detection, and isolation of the infected.[126] As of 13 March, cases were recorded in all countries in Asia except East Timor, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan (while Laos, Myanmar, North Korea, and Yemen have suspected cases).

Europe

Initial cases in Europe were reported in France and in Germany and other countries with relatively low number of cases. On 21 February, a large outbreak was reported in Italy, mostly in the north, near Milan. Cases grew rapidly as the outbreak spread across Europe. As of 15 March, there have been 55,000 confirmed cases and 2300 deaths in Europe; out of these, 25,000 cases and 1800 deaths were in Italy. Cases were recorded in all European countries (some of them exclusively linked to the outbreak in Italy) except in Montenegro. The WHO has declared Europe as the new epicenter of the virus after the situation improved in China.[127]

North America

Cases have been confirmed in Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Greenland, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Aruba, the Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthélemy, and Saint Martin.

Oceania

Cases have been confirmed in Australia, New Zealand, French Polynesia, and Guam. A number of small Pacific island nations have thus far avoided the outbreak by closing their borders.

South America

As of 13 March, cases were recorded in all South American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela, including the French overseas department of French Guiana.

International conveyance

The outbreak spread to several cruise ships including the Diamond Princess, the Grand Princess, the World Dream, the MS Westerdam and the MS Braemar.[128][129][130][131]

Cruise operators have started to either cancel or change their itineraries as countries across the world implement travel restrictions to curb the disease spread. Ports are refusing to accept cruise ships that have been either to Chinese ports or carrying Chinese passengers during the outbreak.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which represents 90% of cruise operators, announced the various precautionary measures being implemented by its members. All passengers who have travelled to or visited/transited through China, Hong Kong and Macau within 14 days before embarkation will be denied entry into cruise ships. Any persons in close contact with either suspected or diagnosed cases of coronavirus infection will also be denied entry. [132]
