"Cool Me Down" is a song recorded by Polish singer Margaret for the reissue of her debut studio album, Add the Blonde (2014), released in 2016. The song was written by Robert Uhlmann, Arash, Alex Papaconstantinou, Anderz Wrethov, Viktor Svensson, Linnea Deb, and produced by Alex Papaconstantinou and Viktor Svensson, with co-production from Arash, Robert Uhlmann and Anderz Wrethov.[1] "Cool Me Down" was made available for digital consumption on 19 February 2016 in Poland. The following month, it was released in Russia, and April saw its worldwide release via Warner Music Group. "Cool Me Down" incorporates pop music with a combination of reggae and electropop.[2]

The single reached number four in Poland, and was certified double platinum by the Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry (ZPAV). It also charted in Romania where it reached number twenty-two, and Sweden where it peaked at number thirty-six and received a gold certification from the Swedish Recording Industry Association (GLF). The song was ranked fortieth on Popjustice' "Top 45 Singles of 2016" list,[3] and was the forty-first most popular song on Polish radio stations in 2016 as well as the sixth most streamed track on Tidal in Poland in 2016.[4]

The song placed second in Poland's national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, despite being bookmakers' and Eurovision fans' favourite to win both the national final and the Eurovision Song Contest.[5][6][7] It later won the OGAE Second Chance Contest 2016 with 277 points.[8] Margaret performed "Cool Me Down" on Sommarkrysset, Lotta på Liseberg and Dancing with the Stars. Taniec z gwiazdami, among others.[9][10][11] The song was used in the third episode of season one of the American drama TV series Famous in Love.[12]

Music video

Prior to the single's official release, on 18 February 2016, its lyric video was released onto YouTube. The anime video was created by Bogna Kowalczyk.[13] Within two months of its premiere it was viewed over eleven million times.[14] The official music video, directed by Olga Czyżykiewicz, was released on 17 May 2016.[13][15]

Cover versions

In 2016, Liam "Liamoo" Cacatian covered the song during the twelfth series of Idol (Sweden).[16] It was also covered by Ola Leśniewicz, Ewa Novel and Sybilla Sobczyk during "battles" round in season seven of The Voice of Poland,[17] and by Magdalena Janicka during blind auditions of the show's eighth season.[18]

Reception

"Cool Me Down" was praised by Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards from Little Mix.[19] The song was nominated for Best Hit at the 2016 Eska Music Awards, and competed for the 2016 RMF FM and Polsat's Hit of the Summer title.[20][21]

Impact

Ellie Chalkley of ESC Insight analysed the song and its impact on the Eurovision Song Contest a year after its release. She stated that Margaret's "impact on the Eurovision Song Contest is real, tangible, and long lasting" and argued that "Poland's loss is the path forward for the Song Contest." Chalkley believed that "even without getting to the competition proper, 'Cool Me Down' might turn out to be one of the most influential Eurovision songs in recent years. It exists at a pop-cultural tipping point and the ways in which Margaret's stomper succeeded and failed could affect the sound of the contest for years to come."[22]
